Native Style Flutes
The Native American flute is a flute that is held in front of the player, has open finger holes, and has two chambers: one for collecting the breath of the player and a second chamber which creates sound. The player breathes into one end of the flute without the need for an embouchure. This flute is played much like a recorder but with a hauntingly mellow, rich and beautiful sound.
The appeal of these flute to many lies in its simplicity. The player has no need for an embouchure. The flutes are generally tuned in a minor scale, which makes playing incredibly easy as there truly are no ‘wrong’ notes. No need to force breath into the flute, you simply breathe into the flute and it will sing. Many players of the Native style flute come to find this instrument later in life. The ease and minor learning curve can have a new player sounding like a seasoned player in little to no time. So if you have always wanted to play music and felt it was too hard to learn, you must give one of these flutes a try!
I currently make native style flutes in both wood and bamboo.
